This amp goes to eleven, the smarter way to learn chords, arpeggios 101

How’s it going for you this weekend? As we’re in the full swing of the holiday season, I’m hunkering down, and thinking of all the cool ways I can do new, fun guitar stuff in 2022. If you’d like to see more or less of anything in the new year from Chasing Sound, let me know!

I’m also always on the lookout for cool guitar deals around Thanksgiving when it comes to guitar, tech, etc. If there’s anything awesome you think I can’t miss, let me know about that too.

Alright let’s get into this week’s links!

  • MASTER the Guitar Using The Circle Of Fifths - Chris Sherland showed up again on Marty Music’s channel to talk all abou the circle of fifths, minor chords, and how to use the circle as a great tool to learn minor chords, with a helpful drill. Chris is one of my favorite teachers online when it comes to theory, and especially applying it to guitar. Check this video out, and then make sure to check out Chris’ own YouTube channel.

  • Turning Your Guitar Amp up to 10 Sounds AMAZING - How much of tone is in your guitar amp’s volume knob? I included this link because I wanted to hear what you typically do with your amps. Do you play it with the master volume set to around 1–2, somewhere around 5, or do you crank it up to 11? Also wondering if you use anything like an amp attenuator.

  • Blues Rock Guitar Lesson: Blues Power Vibrato Techniques with Jared James Nichols - Having a great vibrato is one of the best ways to make your notes sing. In this video for ArtistWorks, Jared James Nichols, who’s a great blues rock guitarist, shows us different examples of vibrato from all sorts of players. He also gives us some great exercises to practice vibrato in our own playing.

  • Acoustasonic Player Series Demo - It seems like this week was when everyone was coming out with their new Acoustasonic videos. Fender was listening to the feedback from players who wanted to own an Acoustasonic, but thought the initial price was out of their budget. Now there are the Acoustasonic Player edition guitars, which only change a few aspects of what made the original guitar great. I’ve played a couple of the original Acoustasonics, and thought they were an interesting idea. I was able to get good acoustic and electric tones from just one guitar. I liked Sweetwater’s review of the new Acoustasonic Player Tele, but I also really dug Andertons where they go over the differences. I’m interested in checking out if we see more and more of these guitars live.

  • The SMARTER way to learn guitar chords - One of my favorite lessons of the week came from Ry Naylor. He talks all about how similar certain chords are, and how small changes can help us in learning chords quicker/better.

  • Live From Flat V - Pete Thorn Interview - Josh Smith sits down with one of YouTube’s favorite guitarists, Pete Thorn. Pete talks about his gigging career, finding his voice on the instrument, inspiration for the gear videos he does, and a bunch more.

  • Arpeggios 101 with Sam Bell - Guitar Playback Virtual Summit - David Wallimann is doing an awesome, end of the year Guitar Playback Virtual Summit. He’s having different guitar teachers on to discuss various aspects of guitar. This link will only work for about a week, and then you’ll have to sign up to David’s learning platform for free to keep on watching the replays. In this first video, David is joined by Sam Bell to talk all about how to use arpeggios.

  • Carlos Santana on Searching for Danger and Beauty in Music | Wong Notes Podcast - Cory Wong recently sat down with Carlos Santana for a new episode of his podcast. In this clip they talk about how music “changed the destiny” of so many different artists. The whole episode is very heady, and Santana shares some great insights. You can check out the full episode here.

That’s it for this week. Thanks for reading!
