Six String Sunday (July 25th, 2021)

I’m back with another issue of Six String Sunday! So much has been going on this week, and I’m excited to share two new announcements with you. First, I have not one, but TWO new shirts in the Chasing Sound merch shop. If you want to support this newsletter and the rest of what I do, I’d love it if you picked one up! The shirt features “Sundays are for Six Strings”, and I made one for seven string guitarists too!

As a second announcement, I wanted to think of a way that I could be active on the guitar every single day in August, so I thought up the concept of LEDIA. You might be asking, what the heck does that mean? It’s an acronym for Lick Every Day In August. Every single day in August I’ll be writing and filming one lick, and I’ll end up posting it on Instagram and TikTok. At the end of the month I’m going to try and combine all of the licks into one big montage video for YouTube. I hope you’ll join me on the journey and do your own challenge!

One last thing, be sure to tune in to next Saturday’s livestream, as I’ll be doing a giveaway! You can sub to Chasing Sound on YouTube here.

Alright, let’s get into this week’s links!

  • String Bending 101 - Part 1: The Basics - Bending out of tune can make any guitarist sound amateurish, but knowing the ins and outs of bending can make your leads sound very vocal. Nick over at Sweetwater does an excellent job of showing beginners how to bend strings, how to reinforce your fingers, and what good and bad bends sound like.

  • I Had To Make A Tough Decision... - If you want to see some stunning guitars that builders made as part of “The Great Guitar Build Off”, then you have to check out Mary Spender’s latest video. She grades scratch and kit built guitars. Crimson Guitars, who’s one of my favorite luthiers on YouTube, is sponsoring the event. Give their channel a look after checking out Mary’s vid!

  • A Very Strange Hendrix V Chord Lick From Red House - Over the last couple of weeks we’ve been talking a lot about highlighting chord changes. In this vid, Anthony from TxBA breaks down Hendrix’s V chord lick from “Red House” which does just that. Also be sure to check out this scale shifting lesson from Chris Sherland that’s also a really helpful lesson on target notes.

  • The Best New Gear at Summer NAMM 2021 - Summer NAMM was much smaller than it’s ever been, but there were still a few gems to be found. The Guitar Geek breaks down some of his favorite gear from the show - including the Two Notes Phil X cabs, the Reverend Reeves Gabrels signature, IK Multimedia pedals and more. Late in the week he reviewed the Animalizzer Fuzz, which sounds awesome!

  • Slash Epiphone Collection - In even more gear news, Epiphone just announced the Slash collection, which has an awesome lineup. And I even agree with Slash’s quote - “For a reasonable amount of money you can get a really great guitar that will last you your whole career.”

  • EP 5: I Tried Tommy Emmanuel's Guitar Warm-Up: This Is What I Learned - If you’re looking for a challenge, you have to check out Tommy Emmanuel’s guitar warm up. This series has been awesome, featuring Cory Wong, Mateus Asato, Ariel Posen and many others. I’ve learned so much from this series.

  • Guitar 2.0 by Manuel Gardner Fernandes and David John Levy - The headless guitars we talked about from Ibanez last week get a really wild demo from Manuel Fernandes and David Levy. These guitars are going to make other headless manufacturers have to up their game and price point.

  • The Top 10 Tele Riffs of All Time! - A really good list, and while I would have moved some things around, and added a few different riffs, Peach Guitars picked some great players for this one. It made me go check out their Strat, SG, and ES videos.

  • Shredding on my signature Charvel (prototype) - Rick’s picking technique is just otherworldly, and I’m so psyched he’s finally getting a well deserved signature model!

  • Using a Capo - Guitar Center just added to their beginner guitar tips series. This video is all about using a capo, but they also have tips on palm muting, using the travis picking technique, and a lot more. The videos are all between 2-5 minutes, so they’re easy to fit in to any practice schedule.

  • SUPER RARE TRAINWRECK LIVERPOOL AMP! AMPS IN THE ZONE #7 - It’s often that I feel I need to stop watching Pete Thorn’s videos, because I typically want every piece of gear he reviews. In his latest video he demos a rare Trainwreck amp, that’s currently fetching $50,000. Which brings me to the question, what’s your upper limit on guitars, amps, effects?

  • Coheed and Cambria drop Shoulders, their first new music in almost 3 years - I’ve been a huge fan of Coheed and Cambria since the early 2000’s, and it’s been exciting to see the band grow over the past 2 decades. They’ve just released their first single in nearly 3 years, called “Shoulders”. It’s super produced hard rock. Really looking forward to hearing the full album when it comes out.

  • 50 architects of the electric guitar - Want to learn more about the history of guitar builders? Check out Guitar World’s 50 Architects of Electric Guitar, where you’ll see names like Leo Fender, Ted McCarty, Paul Bigsby and many more. It was fun to see each person’s contribution to this instrument we all love so much.

  • Hear the new Squier Affinity guitars in action - If you’re just starting out, the Squier Affinity guitars are always a good bang for your buck. Squier just put out videos for their new Affinity Tele, Strat and Jazzmaster guitars. The build quality on these guitars has gone up dramatically over the years, and they’re also perfect guitars to mod down the road.

  • Three of Jason Becker’s iconic guitars fetch $230,000 at online auction - Last week we talked about 3 of Jason Becker’s guitars finishing up their auctions. The result is that the 3 guitars sold for over 200 grand! This is great news, as the money will go to Becker’s ALS medical expenses. I’ll keep this newsletter updated, in case I see any other opportunities to support Jason.

That’s it for this week. Thanks for being subbed to Six String Sunday, I appreciate you reading!
