Six String Sunday - Mayer on how to build a solo, why your G is always out of tune, a gold Boss DS-1

Welcome back to another issue of Six String Sunday! Right at the top here, I wanted to say thanks to everyone who reads this newsletter each week, I really appreciate you being subscribed. Next week I’ll just be getting back from a much needed vacation, so there won’t be an issue of the newsletter, but there will still be a live stream on Saturday August 28th. Join me on YouTube! Let’s get into this week’s links.

  • Play Chords Like a Pro - Whether you’re just starting to learn cowboy chords, or you’re trying to tackle Holdsworth-esque grips, this video from Rhett Shull should help. In it, he goes over 5 hacks to help playing new chords quickly. There are a bunch of non obvious tips here, good for any guitarist.

  • When They Don't Hire REAL Guitarists for Commercials - What do Burger King and Rice Krispies have in common? They don’t hire real guitarists for their commercials. If you want a couple of laughs, check out Stevie T’s new vid.

  • John Petrucci Inspired Alternate Picking Run - Learn this? - As we all patiently await Dream Theater’s new album, why not learn some John Petrucci style guitar parts? Johnathan Cordy teaches us a great alternate picked run.

  • Woodshed Ep. 69 Right Now... PLAY MUSIC - I loved Andy Wood’s new video for 2 reasons: first, he does a beautiful Van Halen tribute at the top, and secondly, he talks about using songs to learn techniques/practice. I’ve been doing this same sort of thing since my teens, and couldn’t agree more, that this is one of the most fun ways to learn guitar.

  • Julian Lage - Emily - Need some new jazz in your life? Check out Julian Lage’s song “Emily” off the album ‘Squint’. I love the room they’re playing in.

  • The Real Reason the G String is Always Out of Tune - Music Is Win talks about why the G string is commonly out of tune - from tuning peg location to lots of jokes about nuts, this was actually a really informative video. Tyler also makes the case for a wound G string.

  • Icons: Dave Mustaine of Megadeth - I’m not through the whole video yet, but this Gibson profile of Dave Mustaine was interesting to watch. Dave talks about Metallica (of course), his upbringing and all the struggles he’s overcome, the history of Megadeth, and a lot more. The interview is good, but I really enjoyed all the throwback videos.

  • John Mayer - "How To Build A Guitar Solo” - This video came across my YouTube feed this week, and it’s one I hadn’t seen before. It’s a young John Mayer along with Tomo Fujita, talking about how to build a guitar solo, live at Berklee College of Music. Mayer shows how to use dynamics and patience on both electric and acoustic guitars.

  • I PLAYED THE RAREST PEDAL IN THE WORLD - Boss DS 1 GOLD- It’s likely that almost everyone has played or seen a Boss DS-1 in their lifetime. But what about a Boss DS-1 GOLD!? Only 6 of these pedals were made. TheGuitarGeek takes it out of the display case for a spin.

  • The Greatest Tapping Guitar Lick of All Time - Tyler at MusicIsWin makes the case that this Randy Rhoads lick is the greatest tapping lick of all time. What’s your favorite tapping lick?

  • Cool New Fender Colors Leaked and a Craigslist Find | Guitar Hunting - Trogly’s guitar show talks about leaked Fender finishes that might be coming soon. I really like the Tequilla sunrise!

  • Joe Bonamassa's "The Bludgeon" demo - Paul and Damian from Guitar World check out Joe Bonamassa’s signature Fender, called “The Bludgeon”. Really great sounding Tele, but the price point is way up there at $8,500.

  • Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi is Gibson’s Latest Signature Artist (Again!) - And speaking of signature guitars, this week we saw the release of Tony Iommi’s new signature SG. It comes in both right and left handed models, and is perfect for riffing out your favorite Sabbath songs. Check out the article for a video where Iommi talks about the creation of the guitar.

  • Dimebag Darrell's estate sues Dean Guitars - There’s some drama in the guitar world this week, as Dimebag Darrell’s girlfriend has sued Dean guitars, and the partnership will be over after 17 years. There are claims and counters on both sides, and it looks like this will play out in court. Regardless of the business side of it, I wonder where Dime guitars will go? Will he head to Wylde Audio? Looks like we’re going to find out pretty soon!

  • Watch Les Paul Give Ignorant Guitarist His Comeuppance - This commercial featuring Les Paul is making the rounds, as this week is the anniversary of LP’s passing back in 2009. I remember meeting Les Paul in the early 2000’s and he was a really sweet guy. I don’t remember this commercial, but I found it pretty funny. I also liked this GP post, talking about the differences between a Gibson and an Epiphone Les Paul.

  • Ariel Posen Unpacks the Gear Behind the Tones on His Breathtaking New Album - If you’ve been reading this newsletter for any amount of time, you’ll know I’m a huge fan of Ariel Posen. In this interview, Ariel sits down with Guitar Player to talk all the awesome gear he used on his most recent album, ‘Headway’. Ariel is a quadruple threat, being a great guitar player and singer, great songwriter, and craftsman of great guitar tones.

That’s it for this week. Thanks for reading!
