3 Books Every Intermediate Guitarist Needs To Read

If you’ve been playing guitar for a couple of years and finally feel like you’re moving into a more intermediate level, you’ll often hit a plateau. It’s common to not know what to work on next, or to even have some gaps in your knowledge. Here are 3 books that’ll help you progress as an intermediate guitarist.

The Advancing Guitarist - There's a reason this is my most gifted guitar book. The lessons contained in these pages could last you a lifetime of learning guitar. Mick Goodrick's way of not hand holding the reader puts you in a great mindset to work things out on your own. I come back to this book often and see new ideas each time. The book is broken down into mechanics, musical materials/examples and his legendary and oftentimes hilarious commentaries. This is a must own book for any guitarist.

Guitar Aerobics - If you want something more laid out, I can recommend this book. It has 52 weeks of things to practice, with ideas for each day of the week. You'll work on picking, rhythm, legato, bending and other techniques, and a lot more. If you stick with this for a full year, it'd be impossible for your playing to not improve.

Any tab of your favorite guitarist - I know this is kind of cheating, but I feel so strongly about it. If you love a particular guitarist's style, you owe it to yourself to learn what scales they're using, how they're arranging songs, what chords they're using, what techniques make them special, and more. If you really want to give your playing a boost, learn from multiple guitarists, and make their ideas your own.

Books are one of the best deals on the entire planet when it comes to learning something new. Where else could you get decades of knowledge for around $10-20? Want more on books? Check out these two posts here and here.
